He claims that it was started by a drunken servant named Grace Poole but because Grace Poole continues to work at Thornfield, Jane concludes that Rochester has not told the entire story. The wedding day arrives. Jane and Mr. Rochester prepare to exchange their vows however, the voice of one man claims that Rochester already has a wife. He introduces himself as the brother of that wife who is a woman named Bertha. Bertha was the real cause of the mysterious fire earlier in the story. Jane disappoints and runs away.
