At the end of 20thcentury, Eisenheim was born the son of a cabinetmaker in Vienna. One day, Eisenheim meets a mysterious magician and learns how perform several tricks for him. He also falls in love with Sophie, the Duchess von Teschen, a noble woman. Although the lovers try to forbid their love, people know their love and make them separate. They meet secretly for a time until they are forcefully separated.
Eisenheim then leaves home and travels the world. He returns to Vienna years later as a master illusionist. He meets Sophie again at one of his performances, when she is volunteered by Crown Prince Leopold as a participant in an illusion. He soon knows that Sophie is expected to marry the Crown Prince, who has a history of abuse towards women. After finishing another performance with Sophie, they realize that they are still in love. They plan to flee the Empire together, but first, something must be done to stop Leopold, who is given Crown of Austria from his aging father, the Emperor. Sophie knows that the Crown Prince will think her as disposable if she leaves him for another man and that he will have both her and Eisenheim and killed.
Leopold finds out that Sophie has met with Eisenheim. While drunk, Leopold blames Sophie and accuses her unfaithful and misbehave woman. She tells him that she will not marry with him and support his plan. When she attempts to leave, it looks like that he kills her, with a sword cut across her neck. Unfortunately, Leopold's royal status makes no accusations. Eisenheim blames Uhl and others. He said that the murderer is crown prince and attempts to prove it by his performance. Eisenheim prepares a new kind of magic show, using mysterious equipment. During his show, Eisenheim leads many people to believe that he possesses supernatural powers. During this show, Eisenheim summons the spirit of Sophie, who says someone in the theater murdered her. And at that time crown prince is in there! And he panicked. Finally, Leopold orders Eisenheim's arrest. However, Eisenheim's body fades away like his summoned spirits.
Uhl soon reveals to Leopold that he has found evidence that links the Crown Prince to Sophie's murder such as a jewel from the prince's sword and a locket that Eisenheim had given Sophie when they were children. After ordering, Leopold discovers that Uhl has already informed the Emperor and the General Staff of Leopold's conspiracy. As the Army arrives at his Palace to arrest him, Leopold shoots himself.
After that, Uhl goes train station to follow small thief who steal Sophie’s locket necklace. As the train leaves, Uhl puts the pieces together in his mind and discovered how Eisenheim faked Sophie's death and framed Leopold for the murder. When Uhl recognizes that, Eisenheim is walking up to a house in the country where Sophie is waiting for him
I really liked this movie. When I was in high school student, my family and I used to go to see a movie at the midnight. i saw this movie at that time. It gave me so many effects and motivated me to study European cultures.
