Listening log 8- Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre

2011 film

120 min; Drama, Romance

Jane Eyre is story about a young orphan. She is raised by Mrs. Reed, her cruel, wealthy aunt. One day, as punishment for fighting with her stupid cousin, Jane’s aunt imprisons Jane in the red-room, the room in which Jane’s Uncle Reed died. While locked in, Jane screams and faints. The doctor Mr. Lloyd suggests to Mrs. Reed that Jane needs to go to school.

The movie starts at that part. Young Jane suffers from a principal of school’s biased but she tries to be better person. Jane’s life improves dramatically. She spends eight more years at Lowood which is the school she studied, six as a student and two as a teacher. After teaching for two years, Jane wants to get new experiences. She accepts a governess position at a manor called Thornfield, where she teaches a lively French girl named Adele. Jane’s employer at Thornfield is a dark, gloomy man whose name is Rochester. Jane finds herself falling secretly in love with him. She saves Rochester from a fire one night. He claims that it was started by a drunken servant named Grace Poole but because Grace Poole continues to work at Thornfield, Jane concludes that Rochester has not told the entire story. When Rochester brings home a beautiful but merciless woman named Blanche Ingram, Jane expects Rochester to propose to Blanche. However, Rochester proposes to Jane, who accepts almost disbelievingly.

The wedding day arrives. Jane and Mr. Rochester prepare to exchange their vows however, the voice of one man claims that Rochester already has a wife. He introduces himself as the brother of that wife who is a woman named Bertha. Bertha was the real cause of the mysterious fire earlier in the story. Jane disappoints and runs away. She thinks she can’t marry with Rochester.

Jane is forced to sleep outdoors and beg for food. At last, three siblings who live in a manor alternatively called Moor House take her in. Their names are Mary, Diana, and St. John. Jane quickly becomes friends with them. St. John is a pastor, and he finds Jane a job teaching at a charity school. St. John decides to travel to India as a missionary purpose, and he wants to accompany with Jane his wife but Jane refuses because she does not love him. However, she realizes that she cannot abandon forever the man she truly loves when one night she hears Rochester’s voice calling her. Jane hurries back to Thornfield and finds that it has been burned to the ground by his wife. Rochester saved the servants but lost his eyesight and one of his hands. Jane travels on to Rochester’s new residence and tries to rebuild their relationship.
